Have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors in therapy?
Creative arts therapy is an evidence-based approach that combines artistic expression with psychological support. In our sessions, I guide you through creative processes, using art as a way to explore emotions, reduce stress, and uncover insights.
If I had to break down a session, here’s what it typically looks like:
Introduction and Setting the Intention: We start with a brief conversation where I ask how you’re feeling and what you hope to achieve. With kids, I often use drawing or role-playing to set the tone for the session.
Exploring the Creative Process: Through various materials—paints, markers, collage elements, or theatre supplies—you’re invited to express yourself. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to create; the goal is not about artistic skill but about emotional expression. Whether you’re drawing, collaging, improvising, or playing, the process allows for a deep exploration of feelings, memories, and inner thoughts.
Reflection and Discussion: After completing your creative work, we reflect together on what emerged. We discuss the images, symbols, or feelings you experienced during the process. This reflection can lead to greater self-awareness and insights into underlying challenges or experiences.
Integration and Closure: I wrap up our session with an activity to integrate the experience and signal that our time together is ending. This might involve journaling, setting personal goals for the future, or—even for kids—their favourite “thinking homework.” It’s a way to let the insights percolate in your mind. My goal is to make sure you leave feeling supported, more connected to yourself, and ready to go back out into the world.
The creative arts therapy sessions provide a safe, non-judgmental space for healing and self-expression, allowing you to access emotions in ways that words alone might not capture.
So, what do you think—could a little creative flair be the twist your healing journey needs?
